“Outlander” Season 3 is finally giving fans what they’ve been waiting for: Claire is going back to the 18th century. The synopsis and trailer hint at what fans can expect in episode 5.

At the end of the last episode of the Starz drama, the trail of clues leading to Jamie (Sam Heughan) ran dry. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) decided to catch a plane back to Boston, and “Outlander” will pick up several months later at Christmas.

“As Brianna grapples with the life-changing revelations of the past summer, Claire must help her come to terms with the fact that she is truly her father’s daughter – her 18th century Highlander father,” the synopsis teases.

Brianna has changed since learning about her biological father, and going back to Boston is a difficult adjustment. She decides to make some big life decisions that do not get Claire’s approval. Brianna’s stubbornness when it comes to this choice likely highlights the fact that she is Jamie’s daughter. After all, that is her most Jamie-like trait (aside from the red hair).

Outlander
Roger (Richard Rankin) visits Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) in “Outlander” Season 3, episode 5. Starz

A sneak-peek video released by Harper’s Bazaar shows Claire in Boston with her fellow doctor Joe (Wil Johnson). He asks if she met a guy while in Scotland, and Claire explains that she was hoping to be reunited with a Scottish man from her past. “We went our separate ways and I had hoped that we would be able to find her again, but fate had other ideas,” Claire explained. Joe has a certain four-letter word for fate.

Claire may have temporarily given up on finding Jamie, but it sounds like Roger (Richard Rankin) soldiered on. “To complicate matters further, Roger brings news that forces Claire and Brianna to face an impossible choice,” the summary says.

A sneak-peek video from E! Online reveals that Roger will come at the worst time possible. Claire and Brianna are in a huge fight. Brianna is moving out and quitting college, but it doesn’t seem like she gave her mother much notice about the sudden changes. They’re both happy to see Roger, but it’s still an awkward situation.

The trailer for episode 5, titled “Freedom and Whisky,” makes it pretty clear that Roger found Jamie. However, Claire isn’t so sure that she can leave her daughter. “If I go, I may never be able to come back,” she says.

It seems the uncertainty about time travel isn’t her only concern. “What if he’s forgotten me? What if he doesn’t love me anymore?” she asks.

It doesn’t seem like that will stop her, though. The trailer shows Claire in the late 1700s approaching a print shop. Watch the promo video below:
