Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are filming “Outlander” Season 3 in South Africa. Starz

“Outlander” Season 3 is officially in new territory. The Scottish show is moving production to South Africa for a portion of Season 3, and fans there have spotted Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan in their off duty hours.

Photos surfaced on Twitter from what appears to be a shopping mall in South Africa. The two weren’t filming, as indicated by their casual 21st century clothing. They seemed to be enjoying a day off together when a few fans stopped them to ask for pictures. The “Outlander” stars, who play Jamie and Claire, happily posed for a couple snaps.

Heughan and Balfe wrapped filming in Scotland in February. They are now filming in Cape Town, which is actually standing in for Jamaica. Executive producer Maril Davis has been keeping Twitter followers updated on the production’s move. She revealed that a small group of Scottish crew members came down, but there are plenty of new faces on set.

Fellow EP Matthew Roberts revealed that scouting locations to stand in for Jamaica presents its own challenges.

It will be quite a while before “Outlander” fans get to see the South African scenes onscreen. Season 3, based on Diana Gabaldon’s book “Voyager,” doesn’t premiere until September, and even then, Jamie and Claire will have to find their way back to each other before they head to the Caribbean together.

When audiences last saw Jamie and Claire, they had been separated for 20 years. Claire had just discovered that Jamie didn’t die in the Battle of Culloden, and she decided she had to return to the past. That might be harder than it looks, though.

Expect the Starz drama to take its time before bringing the couple back together. The early episodes of “Outlander” Season 3 will delve into Jamie and Claire’s time apart. The TV show will dig even deeper into Claire and Frank’s (Tobias Menzies) difficult marriage than the “Voyager” novel did.

“Outlander” Season 3 will premiere on Starz in September.
