KEY POINTS

  • "Palm Springs" and "Lovecraft Country" lead the Critics Choice Super Awards noms
  • "Palm Springs" has earned five nods while "Birds of Prey" has four
  • HBO's "Lovecraft Country" got six noms while "The Boys" received five

“Palm Springs,” “Lovecraft Country” and “Birds of Prey” lead the nominations for the inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards after garnering multiple nods across various categories. The romantic-comedy film leads the pack with five noms while Cathy Yan’s superhero flick came second with four nominations.

The organization announced the nominees on its official website. The award show will honor the movies and TV shows that fall into the superhero, horror, action, science fiction/fantasy, and animation categories.

Leading the pack for movies is Hulu’s “Palm Springs,” a time-loop comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti in lead roles, as it scored five nods, including Best Science Fiction/Fantasy movie. The other nominees in this category include “Love and Monsters,” “Possessor,” “Synchronic,” and “The Vast of Night.”

Samberg, Milioti, and JK Simmons have all received acting nods for their extraordinary work in the movie. Samberg will compete in the Best Actor category with the likes of Anthony Mackie, Jake Horowitz, Christopher Abbott, and Simmons.

The next most nominated movie was DCEU’s “Birds of Prey” with four nominations. The film is considered to be a frontrunner for the Best Superhero Movie accolade while Margot Robbie would surely be a force to be reckoned with in the Best Actress category.

Robbie will get a stiff competition from fellow nominees like Charlize Theron (“The Old Guard”), Jurnee Smollett (“Birds of Prey”), Kiki Layne (“The Old Guard”), and Peyton Elizabeth Lee (“Secret Society of Second-Born Royals”)

Meanwhile, features like “The Old Guard,” “Freaky,” “Onward,” “Sonic The Hedgehog,” “The Hunt,” and “The Willoughbys” nabbed four noms each.

On the Television side, it was HBO’s blockbuster hit TV series “Lovecraft Country” that dominated the list with six nominations, including Best Horror Series. The series chronicles the journey of a young man named Atticus Freeman (played by Jonathan Majors) who embarks on a journey to find his missing father with his friend Letitia Lewis (portrayed Jurnee Smollett).

Majors has received a nomination in the Best Actor in a Horror Series category while Smollett is among the stars nominated for Best Actress.

On the other hand, “The Boys” dominated the superhero categories with five nods.

The awards ceremony will be virtual this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and will air on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021 .
