Helen McCroy was announced as a series regular for “Penny Dreadful” Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con, according to The Hollywood Reporter. McCroy guest starred in two episodes of Season 1 as Madame Kali.

Showrunner John Logan said that McCroy’s character would be the main villain of Season 2. The spiritualist is a human -- unlike last year’s vampire antagonist -- and she is going to pose a huge threat to all the characters, especially Vanessa Ives.

A human villain doesn’t mean the show is going to cut back on the supernatural elements. “The cosmology, the theology of the show gets much larger [in season two] — they’re thrown into a much more threatening supernatural world,” Logan said, according to Variety.

Madame Kali was going to be revealed as the next villain in the Season 1 finale, and McCroy even filmed a scene where Kali makes her evil intentions clear. However, “Penny Dreadful” producers couldn’t fit the scene into the already jam-packed episode 8. The scene will end up in the season premiere, but SDCC audiences got a sneak peek.

Producers showed the deleted scene to the audience at the “Penny Dreadful” SDCC panel. Kali speaks to Ferdinand Lyle about Vanessa Ives. Kali says, “What games we’ll have, Miss Ives and I, when one will live and one will die.”

Ferdinand Lyle will appear with Madame Kali more in Season 2. His portrayer, Simon Russell Beale, was also added as a series regular.

"Penny Dreadful" will return to Showtime in 2015. Do you want to see more of Madame Kali and Ferdinand Lyle? Sound off in the comments section below.
