A pet dog was viciously attacked by a territorial black swan as the canine was swimming in an artificial lake in Chengdu, south-western China, on Saturday.

A video of the incident posted on social media showed the golden retriever merrily swimming when the swan approaches the canine with its wings open before attacking it. For the next few seconds, the swan beats the dog with its wings and pecks at its head. All this while, the canine struggles to stay afloat.

In the meantime, the dog’s owner can be heard screaming for the canine to get back to the shore.

"Xishi, leave! Come here!" she screams. The dog finally manages to swim safely to the shore and is pulled out of the water by its owner.

Speaking to local media, the dog’s owner said her pet was attacked by the swan last year. Meanwhile, the video of the incident posted on social media on the same day has since gone viral with over 10 million views.

The incident comes a few months after a swan attacked and killed a pet dog while the canine was having a swim in a duck pond at a park in Dublin. A group of swans was swimming in the same pond as that of the cocker spaniel when one of the birds broke free from the group and began attacking the canine. A man heard the dog’s owner screaming for help and immediately began screaming at the swan in an attempt to distract the bird. However, it was of no use as the swan began beating down on the dog “with one wing and then the other.”

“That stunned the poor thing. Three or four more slaps and the dog was gone,” the man said.
