A man was arrested after he flung his two dogs from the eighth floor of his apartment complex, killing both the pets. The incident took place in the Indian city of Gurugram on Monday.

The incident came to light Monday morning when morning walkers spotted two Shih Tzus on the ground. Nikita Kapoor, a resident of the complex, said she was walking with a friend when the canines, aged eight-nine months, fell.

“All of a sudden, both dogs fell at my feet one after another. When I looked up, I saw the owner staring down from his balcony,” Kapoor said, adding that she ran to the apartment and rang the doorbell but no one answered. When she then called on the owner’s phone, he said he was outside and would return only in the evening.

“The residents had tried to speak with the accused, but he did not take the calls and had reverted that he was on work and would only return in the evening,” a police officer said.

A police complaint was filed and the autopsy revealed multiple organ rupture and internal bleeding. Accordingly, police arrested the owner, a 25-year-old unnamed Iraqi doctor who had been living in India for the past several years, and interrogated him.

“The police team took prompt action and questioned him. The incident was shared multiple times on social media,” the police officer said, adding “He has confessed to the crime and has revealed that he got angry at the puppies as they were not behaving properly and not listening to his commands.”

The accused appeared in court Tuesday evening and was granted bail. Reacting to the bail, Chetna Joshi, an animal welfare activist, said, “The police should have taken him to task for not just one but many serious violations of the law.” The investigation was ongoing.
