Two people were charged after a puppy was kicked into a hotel’s pool in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Saturday.

Patrolling officers were flagged by the staff of the hotel who told them that two people, identified as 23-year-old Dillon Edward Lark and 20-year-old Kelsey White, came into the pool area with the canine and the former kicked the puppy into the pool. The puppy, which struggled to swim, was saved by the other people in the pool.

Police entered the hotel and found the puppy in the parking lot with Lark’s brother. Though the canine initially showed no signs of discomfort, it later showed signs of distress when the officers touched its abdomen. When questioned, Lark’s brother said the canine had a cracked rib from a previous incident. The officers seized the puppy and sent it to the Grand Strand Humane Society (GSHS) for treatment.

Police then interrogated Lark who admitted to kicking the dog after being drunk. White, who was at the hotel, was detained. While Lark was charged with ill-treatment of animals and public intoxication, White was charged with possession of alcohol.

Meanwhile, GSHS named the puppy Sarah and said she was very scared of people when they got her. The canine was not up for adoption as of now because of the pending case in the court.

"We also want to let the community know, if you see something or hear something that doesn't seem right, please make sure that you notify the local authorities. These animals can't speak for themselves and they rely on us to stand up for them," the organization said.
