A Philadelphia man was arrested Tuesday after he intentionally struck a group of people with his car following an altercation, injuring six.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a report of a man trying to run over people with his gray Buick Century car. They said the six people injured in the incident ranged from 17 to 42 years old in age, and two of them were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The condition of the other victims remained unknown.

A witness said it looked like the car was running over people like bowling pins.

"He just bowled the people down man, like it was crazy, it was crazy," said Ricky Baker, adding, “He lost his mind and then the neighborhood guys, they jumped on him.”

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said, “Some people from the neighborhood pulled the driver out of the vehicle and assaulted him, causing injuries to his face,” CBS Philadelphia reported.

Jessica Nace, another witness, said she saw people beating up a man when she was driving through the area.

"They were pounding him and hitting him, beating him up in the car. Then they pulled him out of the car and he was on the ground and they were kicking him and stuff,” Nace said, 6 ABC reported.

The 44-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, was apprehended and taken to a nearby hospital after suffering injuries to his head and face. Though the reason for the altercation was not known, police believed the suspect maybe a family member of someone involved in the street fight. Witnesses said the suspect yelled about his brother during the altercation.

The investigation was ongoing and the suspect was expected to be charged with “aggravated assault by motor vehicle” and other related offenses. Police said footage from CCTV cameras in the area would reveal more details.

In a similar incident in February, a New York man was arrested after he intentionally struck a family of eight, killing a woman. Jason Mendez, 35, ran over the family that included the woman, her husband and their six children after the father asked him to not smoke near the children. Mendez was charged with second-degree murder and seven counts of “second-degree attempted murder.”
