“Pirates of the Caribbean 6” is not coming to theaters anytime soon, but things are moving along behind the scenes.

Joachim Rønning will reportedly be back as the director. What the film needs is a good script and a decision on the cast members. After this groundwork is in place, the actual production is expected to begin in 2020.

Rønning directed the fifth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise titled “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” and he is currently busy making “Maleficent 2.” According to a report by Geeks Worldwide, a source has revealed that the script of the upcoming film is being written by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio and Jeff Nathanson.

There has been no official announcement with regards to the cast and crew members as of this writing, and there are conflicting reports about it. According to We Got This Covered, “Deadpool” writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are in talks to write the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6.”

As for the cast, Disney is reportedly considering replacing Johnny Depp with a female lead. Depp, who plays Captain Jack Sparrow, is the star and the face of the franchise. The report suggested that Jack will be replaced by Redd, a meet-and-greet character in Disneyland. Redd is reportedly based on the real life pirate Anne Bonny.

A reboot may be necessary after the lackluster response to “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” There is a big gap between the fifth installment and the upcoming film, which should be enough to get the fans excited about the franchise. It remains to be seen if there will be a change in the cast as a part of the reboot.

According to Screen Rant, “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” may focus mostly on the new additions to the franchise. Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), the two characters that were introduced in “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” have a connection to the more established characters in the franchise, and at the same time, they offer something new to the audience.

On the question of Depp, Screen Rant pointed out that the actor is more of a liability right now, thanks to all the bad press he has been getting. From allegations of domestic abuse from his ex-wife to his reported erratic behavior on the sets, things don’t seem to be going well for the actor nowadays.

However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said in the past that he doesn’t see how the franchise can continue without Depp. Whether or not Depp will return in “Pirates of the Caribbean 6” will be revealed when the official announcement is made.
