A responding police officer shot and killed a pit bull after injuring three people in a crazed attack in Logan Square Thursday.

According to Eyewitness News, the attack happened just before 12:00 p.m. in the 2400 block of North Lawndale. The dog, which neighbors claimed to be aggressive, got loose and turned on its handlers.

The handlers were house-sitting for the dog's owner. They decided to take the 1-year-old canine out for a walk, but the animal snapped and mauled them.

“I was inside and I just heard screaming like, 'Help, call 911, call 911,'” said resident Kimberly Pineda.

She added that they know that the particular dog was known to be hostile and that it was notorious for barking at passersby “and trying to launch that them.”

The dog's handlers – a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman – sustained bite wounds in their arms while they both tried to calm the beast down.

Shortly after they were notified about the incident, officers responded and arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, one of them was also bitten by the dog in the arm.

CBS Chicago reported that officers tried a subtle way to subdue the animal. They tased the dog, but it wasn't enough. A Chicago police sergeant had no other choice but to shoot the pit bull to prevent it from causing any more injuries.

The bitten officer was rushed to the West Suburban Medical Center while the handlers were treated at the Norwegian American Hospital, said the Chicago Fire Department.

A friend of one of the victims said that the male dog walker needed to have surgery and remained at the hospital. All three are in stable condition.

The city's Animal Care and Control was also called and responded to the scene.

Authorities provided little details about the incident, including whether or not the victims will file charges against the dog's owner.

Pit bulls are one of the most misunderstood dog breeds due to its notoriety to attack and sometimes kill other dogs and people.

One Green Planet said that these type of dogs are not inherently dangerous. However, they can become violent if they lack training, or if their owners are violent to them. Even the American Pit Bull Terrier, the breed generally used in dog fights, passed the American Temperament Test Society with a rate of 82.6 percent.

The outlet also pointed that other dog breeds which are thought to be cute and gentle like the Chihuahua have a lower temperament score than the pit bull breed.
