The Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) Animal Control is leading the investigation on an animal attack incident in which a chihuahua was killed in a park on Palm Springs last Friday.

The initiative was relayed through an official news release and was later posted on the Department's official Twitter page.

According to the news release, the incident took place on Sept. 20 at around 7:30 p.m. at Demuth Park on 4200 E. Mesquite Avenue. It was here that “Diablo” was attacked and killed by a pit bull.

The pit bull's owner left the scene before any information could be gathered, it added.

The PSPD Animal Control was notified of the attack and initiated its own investigation on Sept. 22, 2019.

Diablo's owner Jennifer Martinez told News Channel 3 that the dog had “to be put down” due to the severity of its injuries.

“He was like our fur baby, not just some pet you know? He was one of our own...” said the grieving family.

Together with the PSPD, they are now seeking any information on the whereabouts of the pit bull's owner. They have also set up a GoFundMe page to help them pay the hefty $2,300 worth of veterinarian's bill.

Martinez pointed on the page that Diablo's attacker was not on a leash and that he suffered four open wounds on his body. “Until the owner is found we are held responsible,” she added.

The family described the pit bull's owner to be a tall, white male in his mid 50s who stood at least 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with brown, straight hair and no facial hair.

He was wearing a beige baseball cap, dark green shirt, khaki shorts and brandished a wooden cane at the time of the attack.

The news release pointed out that the pit bull's owner may be unaware of the injuries and damages his dog had inflicted to Diablo and its family and is not wanted for any criminal violations at the time.

Martinez also shared Diablo's untimely passing on her Twitter page.

“It's so weird having only 2 dogs now,” she said on post the day after Diablo died.

Those with any leads on the dog that attacked and killed Diablo, its owner or those who may have witnessed the incident can call the Animal Control Hotline or contact Martinez via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
