Does a movie about an alien invasion that takes the form of classic video game characters – such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong – sound interesting? Apparently a whole lot of fans think so! The trailer for “Pixels,” the upcoming Sony film starring Adam Sandler, which is about just that, broke records for views in 24 hours after its release online Tuesday.

According to Variety, the “Pixels” trailer was viewed over 34 million times in the first day of its release. That marks a new record for a Sony movie trailer, smashing the previous high of 22 million views for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

In “Pixels,” Adam Sandler plays an arcade gaming champion who is called on to help fight an alien invasion where the enemy appears as gigantic versions of iconic video game characters. The supporting cast includes Kevin James, as the president of United States, as well as Peter Dinklage and Michelle Monaghan. Chris Columbus (“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”) directed the comedy-action film.

The buzz about “Pixels” could mean a return to box office relevance for Sandler. Besides the “Grown-Ups” franchise – which relies on the strength of a large ensemble of comedy stars – the actor’s latest releases have stalled at the box office. His 2014 flick, “Blended” with Drew Barrymore, netted only $14 million in its opening weekend, 2011’s “Jack and Jill” did not fair much better, earning $24 million, and 2012’s “That’s My Boy” failed to even clear $40 million through its entire theatrical release. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” had a $91 million opening weekend after its record-breaking trailer release. Could “Pixels” translate its initial buzz into that level of success in theaters?

Sandler will certainly hope so. However, time will tell if the mass of fans watching the trailer will turn out when the movie premieres. “Pixels” is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 24.
