Actress Whoopi Goldberg and Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson engaged in a Twitter feud Wednesday after Goldberg said McKesson should "get over himself" after the activist tweeted that the movie "Planet of the Apes" was racist.

"DeRay, you need to go back and watch the 1968 original and check out what the apes were wearing. This has nothing to do with you," Goldberg said on Wednesday's taping of "The View," arguing that the movie wasn't about race but about environmentalism.

"This was a movie about what happens when mankind doesn’t pay attention to the environment, to how we treat animals and each other," she continued. "That’s what that movie was about… Get over yourself!"

McKesson shot back at Goldberg on Twitter shortly after the episode of "The View" aired, saying "if you have something to say, I'm here."

The activist had tweeted — and subsequently deleted — a post where he said that he was "offended" and "appalled" by the "lack of consciousness in Hollywood" over the "Planet of the Apes" movie, which he said dehumanized black people in mass media.

"Given the history of rendering black people as apes, I’m offended & appalled by the lack of consciousness in Hollywood. #PlanetOfTheApes," said Mckesson in a tweet Tuesday that was deleted soon afterward. "In associating black people w/ apes, active work is being done to perpetuate the dehumanization of black ppl in mass media."

He explained the tweet Wednesday, saying that he was contacted by people within Hollywood who thought it was an issue. He then followed up saying that he talked to "even more people about the history of the film" and deleted the accusatory tweet.

On Twitter, the reaction to the Goldberg and McKesson conflict was mixed, with users mocking both sides.

The social media platform mocked the Black Lives Matter activist for being offended, while others commented that Goldberg has had hit-or-miss history when it comes to her views on racism.
