KEY POINTS

  • Reddit user youessbee shared in the PS5 subreddit that he took a Nielsen survey on the price of the PlayStation 5 and its digital version
  • The rumor is that the base version of the PS5 will be priced at $436 while the discless version will be sold at $323
  • If Sony is taking these rumors seriously, then they might be delaying the formal announcement of their price even as they try to put one over on the Xbox Series X

With the PlayStation 5 mere months away from its holiday season launch, Sony seems to still be undecided on the price for its next-gen console.

Reddit user youessbee shared in the PS5 subreddit that he took a Nielsen survey on the price of the PlayStation 5 and its digital version, Digital Trends reports.

“As mentioned in the product description, the pricing of this new product (PlayStation 5) has not yet been determined,” a screenshot of the survey reads. The survey also assigns “random” pricing to the console of 349 British pounds for the base console and 259 British pounds for the digital version, which is equivalent to about $436 and $323, respectively.

The Reddit user claims that after taking Nielsen surveys on TV shows and movies with “random” synopses, a show or film with the same story is released after some months.

However, youessbee said that in the case of previous surveys taken, the prices mentioned are low while the products are released with a 20% increase in cost, thus those prices are unlikely to be final for the PlayStation 5.

If the survey and screenshot are proven to be true, then Sony might actually be receptive to the answers of these surveys and might delay the decision on the price of the PlayStation 5 at a much later date. The prices mentioned in the survey also validate the rumors of a price difference of approximately $100 between the PS5 version with a disc and the disc-less version of the same console.

Clearly, the price point will be one of the main battlegrounds in the console wars for the next-generation, says Digital Trends. Rumors have the PS5 being released with a $500 price tag while the digital, disc-less version will sell for $400. On the other hand, executive vice-president of gaming at Microsoft Phil Spencer has said that he expects their Xbox Series X will compete favorably with Sony’s console.

With the Xbox One initially priced at $500 at launch before eventually being discounted, Spencer has admitted that their side has learned from the past. He has also said that, in the wake of COVID-19, Microsoft is very conscious of pricing their console, recognizing that it is not essential in people’s lives.

As it stands, both Sony and Microsoft are seemingly playing a game of chicken to see who blinks first and finalizes price points for the war ahead.
