A pregnant woman was fatally shot inside her Texas home Monday evening. The doctors were able to save her baby.

Domonique Mellion, 23, was struck by a bullet in the head while inside her apartment in Baytown. A 20-year-old man outside the apartment was also shot. He is said to be in recovery at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Police initially thought that Mellion was a victim of stray bullets that had been fired during a shootout between vehicles. Now they are convinced that her apartment was targeted, reported New York Post.

Mellion was airlifted to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The doctors were able to successfully deliver the infant. The newborn was then taken to the Texas Children's Hospital and is currently recovering.

According to neighbors, they heard the gunshots around 6:30 p.m.

"I'm sorry for her – my heart goes out to her and her family. I just know that the lady who lost her life was pregnant, and it's just sad – it's so sad," neighbor Ronni Moore told KHOU 11.

Moore added that she had heard eight or nine shots being fired. "If we had been out here, we, you know, probably would've been shot because we usually sit right out here and smokes," Moore said further.

Ernest Adams, Jhakeem Monrose and Shai-Keem Thomas are being considered as persons of interest in the incident. They are now being questioned by the police.

"Detectives quickly identified three persons of interest and are working to determine what, if any, role these three may have had in this shooting," police said as per KHOU 11.

Anyone with information on the incident is being asked to call the Baytown Police Department at 281-422-8371.

The apartment complex was also involved in another incident in 2019. Pamela Turner, 44, was fatally shot in the complex moments after she yelling, "I am pregnant!" But according to the New York Post report, police were able to confirm that Turner wasn't pregnant at the time of her death.
