Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles faced more adverse publicity than Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to step down from their royal roles months after they complained about the non-stop criticisms they received from the press. Prince Harry and Markle announced last week that they are quitting their royal roles.

According to veteran royal photographer and commentator Arthur Edwards, things were worse for the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall after Princess Diana’s death. In fact, for him, the heir to the throne suffered more adverse publicity than any member of the royal family in modern times. However, they never complained and they never ran away.

“Charles and Camilla faced up to the criticism, got on with it and showed they were two people who want to do their duty for their country,” Edwards wrote for The Sun.

“No matter what bad publicity they have had, they have always looked straight down the camera and won over their critics.”

Penny Junor also revealed in her 2017 biography how Camilla weathered the “horrendous” time. According to Junor, it was a tough time for the duchess who became the subject of lewd jokes and lurid headlines. She also received abusive letters to the point that she became a virtual prisoner in a big house with no security.

“Life became horrendous, not just for Camilla herself but for all her immediate family. How anyone comes back from that sort of public humiliation in unimaginable. I suspect most people would have been crushed by it,” Junor wrote.

Prince Harry and Markle’s decision to step back took many by surprised especially after they announced that they will work to be financially independent. The Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William were also shocked and were furious and disappointed because they were never informed before the couple made the big announcement.

According to bookmakers, Queen Elizabeth II might abdicate this year following the Sussexes’ resignation. British bookmaker Coral has slashed the odds of the Queen stepping down in 2020 to 5/1. Many also believe that Prince Harry and Markle might announce their second pregnancy soon.
