Prince Charles’ confidante and mentor, Lord Louis Mountbatten, was previously accused of being homosexual.

During an interview several decades ago, socialite Elizabeth de la Poer Beresford claimed that Mountbatten had a penchant for young men. According to Baroness Decies, this made Mountbatten unfit to direct any sort of military operations.

“She states that in those circles, Lord Louis Mountbatten and his wife are considered persons of extremely low morals. She stated that Lord Louis Mountbatten was known to be a homosexual with a perversion for young boys,” the files read.

The document was signed by EE Conroy, the head of the New York field office. But Conroy also claimed that the baroness seemed as though she had a motive in making the controversial statements.

But Beresford wasn’t the only person who accused Mountbatten of being gay. In fact, he reportedly had a group of gay friends who gave him the hilarious nickname “Mountbottom.”

And Mountbatten’s previous comment about himself and his wife sleeping on other people’s beds just worsened the speculations about his sexuality.

Meanwhile, Mountbatten also made headlines this week after his special connection with Prince Charles was revisited. When he was still alive, Mountbatten reminded the future King of the importance of choosing his future bride wisely.

“You have got to choose somebody very carefully, I think, who could fulfill this particular role…it has got be somebody very special,” Mountbatten told Prince Charles.

He also endorsed the relationship between the Prince of Wales and Amanda Knatchbull. But following his death, Prince Charles and Knatchbull’s relationship ended after the former proposed to the latter and she said no.

Shortly after, Prince Charles realized that he wanted to propose to Princess Diana after she showed compassion while he was still mourning the death of his great-uncle. Unfortunately, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage was also short-lived.

The couple tied the knot in 1981, but they separated in 1992. In 1996, their divorce was finalized.
