Prince Charles was in a relationship with Princess Diana’s older sister, Sarah Spencer before he dated the late Princess of Wales.

The future king was in his late 20s when he started seeing Sarah, who was 22 years old at that time. Not much is known about the couple’s romance, but it is believed that Prince Charles split from Spencer because she spoke too openly with the media.

Reporter James Whittaker said that during a lunch with Princess Diana’s older sister, Spencer told him that she would never marry Charles regardless if he will be the future king or if he were just the dustman. After Whittaker’s article was printed out, Prince Charles and Spencer broke up.

Royal biographer Andy McSmith revealed that Spencer was soon frozen out of the royal entourage after the 1977 article was printed out. However, it is unclear if she said she will never marry Prince Charles to simply shut down rumors that they were dating or otherwise.

After the couple split, Prince Charles and Spencer stayed friends with each other. In fact, it was Spencer that introduced Prince Charles to Princess Diana in 1980. A year later, Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their engagement, and Spencer was quoted as saying that she played cupid for the couple.

But after their wedding in 1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana soon found out that they were not a match for each other. In 1992, the couple announced their decision to go their separate ways. Three years later, Princess Diana sat down for a controversial interview with Martin Bashir for Panorama.

During the interview, Princess Diana confirmed Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ affair. She also said that her marriage to the future king felt crowded because there was three of them in that union.

After her interview, Queen Elizabeth II reportedly urged Princess Diana and Prince Charles to finalize their divorce, and they did in 1996. One year later, Princess Diana passed away following a fatal car crash in Paris with her boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed, who also passed away.
