KEY POINTS

  • Prince Harry was named Henry at birth and only used the moniker "Harry" around his family and friends
  • When Kensington Palace referred to him as Prince Harry, the press started to call him the same way
  • Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, just like Prince Harry, don't use their first names in public

Prince Harry and other royals are addressed by their monikers, instead of their first names, according to a report.

The Duke of Sussex spoke with this year's WellChild Awards winner 4-year-old Henry Waines online, and a clip of their call was released on YouTube. Prince Harry introduced himself as "Henry" while chatting with the family.

"My name is Henry as well, but everyone calls me Harry. Don't ask, I have no idea why," the royal, whose given name is Henry Charles Albert David, said on the call from his home in Montecito, California.

Henry's mom, Shevonne, explained that they named their son after him.

According to Fox News Digital, the members of the royal family are no different from the public because they also have nicknames. However, while some of the nicknames have remained private, others have been out in public and used as their names.

In Prince Harry's case, he was introduced as Henry when he was born and was only called Harry by his family and those in his inner circle. However, over time, more and more referred to him as Prince Harry. When Kensington Palace began referring to him using his moniker, the press did the same too.

The use of Harry as a nickname for Henry has been common since Medieval England. King Henry VIII, was one of the best-known Henrys from the past, and he also went by Harry around his family and friends.

Aside from Prince Harry, his sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, uses her moniker instead of her first name. The Princess of Wales was born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton. However, she has always been known to the public as Kate.

Prince William and other members of the firm sometimes refer to her by her first name, but she has been going by her moniker since before she met her husband. The media also referred to her as Kate.

Kate is a common nickname for people named Caitlyn or Catherine. Many celebrities use the same nickname, including Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Kate Upton and Kate Bosworth.

The Duchess of Cambridge is not the only family member in the Middletons who use a moniker. Her sister Philippa also goes by her moniker, Pippa.

Prince Harry's wife, Meghan Markle, was born Rachel Meghan Markle. However, she stopped using her first name and opted for her middle name since she was still in school.

It is unclear why the former "Suits" star made the switch from her first name to her middle name as she has never publicly spoken about it. There were speculations that she didn't like her original name because it was so popular. Meanwhile, others believed she wanted to stand out and liked "Meghan Markle" because it sounded better.
