Talk that Queen Elizabeth might consider relinquishing her duties and installing Prince Charles as the new monarch after she reaches her 95th birthday in 2021 continues to swirl, but if her Majesty did, in fact, decide to invoke the Regency Act, her husband, Prince Philip, would be the one to see a big change in title.

According to Express UK, there has been chatter that Queen Elizabeth is seriously considering bringing in the Regency Act of 1937 in order to relinquish “the majority of duties” to her son, who is next in line for the throne if she chooses to figuratively step down from her post. In order for the act to pass, Prince Philip, the Lord Chancellor, the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Lord Chief Justice of England and the Master of the Rolls all have to agree there is sufficient evidence to support the Queen’s request, and that she can only make it if she feels she is unable to fully perform her duties. However, such a decision would not only affect her and Prince Charles but her husband as well.

According to the website, upon Queen Elizabeth potentially stepping down, he would see a title change to become the Guardian of the Queen.

Reportedly, the move to have Charles start taking over more of the queen’s duties has already begun, with the future king appearing at the state opening of Parliament, the Commonwealth conference and even filling in on foreign trips for her in recent years.

However, some don’t believe that the Queen will do such a thing since she took an oath on her 21st birthday, where she stated she would be devoted to service for her entire life, no matter how long it was.

It was previously reported that the Queen might be considering retirement due to loneliness since her husband retired from active service as the King Consort back in 2017, with royal expert Duncan Larcombe previously telling Yahoo’s Royal Box that should her husband pass away, she would likely decide to then step down as a result.

“A lot of people think that perhaps she might stand down once her husband the Duke of Edinburgh passes away,” he said at the time. “That is certainly a possibility. She has always been with him, by her side and now he’s retired.”
