Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II have stayed together for so many years.

On their wedding day in 1947, the Duke of Edinburgh reportedly made a life-changing promise to Her Majesty. Royal historian Sally Bedell Smith revealed that on the morning of their wedding, Prince Philip vowed to give up smoking.

According to Smith, Prince Philip’s smoking left his former valet, John Dean, very busy refilling the cigarette boxes. But since Prince Philip was aware of the Queen’s dad’s addiction to the vice, he suddenly made the decision to quit smoking and never did he once regret it.

The Queen’s dad, King George VI, was a heavy smoker, and this bad habit contributed to a string of illnesses that eventually took his life. Princess Margaret, the Queen’s younger sister, was also a lifelong smoker, and the habit also contributed to her health problems and eventual death in 2002.

While speaking with BBC in 2016, the Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter said that the people surrounding Her Majesty when she was much younger smoked heavily.

“Both her father and her sister smoked, but it never attracted her. It was something that just didn’t appeal,” he said.

Prince Harry also smoked heavily before meeting Meghan Markle, but the Duke of Sussex has reportedly stopped. Camilla Parker Bowles was also a heavy smoker, but she managed to stop the habit after he was encouraged by Prince Charles to do so.

Meanwhile, other than making a lifelong promise to the monarch on their wedding day, Prince Philip also gave his wife a special gift to mark the occasion. The Duke of Edinburgh gave the Queen a special diamond bracelet on their wedding day.

Prince Philip directed the design of the large geometric Art Deco bracelet by Philip Antrobus, which was crafted with diamonds from his mother Princess Alice of Battenburg’s tiara. The Queen was photographed wearing the same bracelet in her 2012 Diamond Jubilee portrait.
