Prince William always knew that he will one day become king, and he reportedly accepted the role as early as his teenage years.

Even though there are some reports suggesting that Prince William didn’t want to become king, he embraced the position after Prince Charles and Princess Diana finalized their divorce in 1996.

At that time, rumors swirled that Prince Charles wanted to strip Princess Diana of her title as Princess of Wales, but Prince William vowed to keep it and to make his mom proud, according to CheatSheet.

In the documentary “The Queen’s Children,” Jeremy Paxman claimed that when the Duke of Cambridge was so much younger, he didn’t really want to become king. And during moments where he doubted that he could carry out the role, Prince Harry stepped up and said that he would gladly take the position.

“We talked about our children and she said William often told her he didn’t really want to be King, and then Harry would say, ‘If you don’t want the job, I’ll have it!’” Paxman shared.

But as Prince William got older and he also became more aware of the importance of his role, he became more open-minded about becoming the future King.

Unfortunately, the day that he could finally sit on the throne won’t come anytime soon. This is because Queen Elizabeth II is still today’s reigning monarch. The 92-year-old royal vowed to never give up her throne and she also said that she will be of service to the nation until the day she dies.

When the Queen dies, gets sick, or abdicates that’s the only time that Prince Charles would be crowned as King. When this happens, Prince William will only be known as the heir to the throne.

It is only when Prince Charles dies or abdicates that he could finally become King and live up to the promise that he made to his late mother.
