Prince William and Kate Middleton were recently criticized for seemingly ignoring Meghan Markle when she greeted them at Westminster Abbey during her final royal engagement.

On the “HeirPod” podcast, royal experts Omid Scobie and Maggie Rulli weighed in on the awkward moment between the royals. Rulli said that the Cambridges and Sussexes had the chance to have the optics of unity but they didn’t take advantage of that rare opportunity.

“A lot of the younger royals were sitting together and it appears in this moment Meghan sort of mouths hello to William and Kate who are sitting nearby to them and it appears no one gestures back,” she said.

“But I think the initial moment when the Cambridges arrived and the Sussexes both said hello and it was what looked like a frosty reception to that. That felt weird to me because I thought that the initial hello regardless of what may have happened off-camera over the next ten minutes before the Queen sat down was a chance to show the world that everything is fine,” Scobie said.

The royal commentator pointed out the fact that the live feeds were going off inside Westminster Abbey so it was impossible to know every single thing that transpired between the Cambridges and the Sussexes at that time. Scobie said that it’s definitely possible that something took place while the cameras weren’t on them.

Meanwhile, Middleton and Markle after their first respective royal engagements were analyzed by James Bryce, the CEO and founder of communications analytics firm gweek.

“Kate’s speech comes across sufficiently. She gives you a genuine sense of how she feels at the time. She lets authentic self-lead the way. She is clear in her thinking and speaking process, and stays within her comfort zone,” he told Express.

Markle’s thinking-speaking processes are agile. The Duchess of Sussex uses short, to the point phrases, which are easy to follow. But she gestures freely at the same time.
