Princess Diana thought she would have a happy ending after she married Prince Charles, however, their marriage was riddled with scandal and heartbreak. Once Charles began his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, Diana sought affection from James Hewitt.

Although Princess Diana confided in Hewitt and often wrote love letters to the cavalry officer, she appeared “sad and needy” throughout their affair.

In the 1994 book titled, “Princess in Love,” Anna Pasternak claimed Diana’s love letters to Hewitt were quite emotional. “I sat up all night reading Diana’s sprawling hand; each letter was signed ‘Julia.’ It was a surreal experience,” she explained.

“They spanned a variety of styles, from gushing Sloane and ‘whoopee-cushion’ humor to the raw pain of therapy-speak.”

The author claimed Hewitt was one of the few people Princess Diana could share her true feelings with, but it was clear she still wanted to be with Prince Charles and feel accepted by the Royal Family. “These billets-doux, which formed the basis of my book, were loving and sentimental,” Pasternak wrote.

“They showed Diana at the zenith of her affair, grateful for Hewitt’s compassion. It was agonizing to read how needy and sad Diana was. How she craved recognition from Prince Charles and the palace for her charity work, only to feel snubbed by both.”

Despite her scandalous marriage, Princess Diana remained favored by the press and the public. “All she felt was the force of their jealousy over her popularity, while her fury at Charles’s feelings for Camilla scorched the page. She was hurt that the Queen liked Camilla,” the royal biographer.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles finalized their divorce in 1996. The Princess of Wales died in a car crash the following year, and Charles went on to marry Camilla.
