One thing that men do not want to ever experience is having prostate cancer. This is a debilitating disease, with cases increasing every year. While many men get anxious about contracting this deadly disease, there is one food that could help lower the risk and prevent its onset.

A study at the Tohoku University School of Public Health in Japan revealed that mushrooms have the potential to reduce the risk of men against developing prostate cancer. The study observed more than 36,000 Japanese men. They observed that those who constantly eat mushrooms were able to lower their risk against prostate cancer.

Men over 50 years of age benefited from eating mushrooms. Even at this age, and their diet consisted mainly of meat and dairy, with little fruits and vegetables, they still enjoyed the great benefits of devouring mushrooms.

As stated in Express’ report, Assistant Professor, Shu Zhang, the lead author of the study, enunciated, "The results of our study suggest mushrooms may have a positive health effect on humans. Test-tube studies and studies conducted on living organisms have shown that mushrooms have the potential to prevent prostate cancer."

The study conducted by Zhang and his team was the first long-term study that sought to analyze the link between mushrooms and prostate cancer. It was the first-ever published in the International Journal of Cancer.

Two groups of men were monitored between 1990 and 1994 throughout the study, with 36,499 men participating. They were between 40 and 79 years old, located in Miyagi and Ohsaki, Japan.

The key point in the study was that the positive effects of mushroom in lowering the risk of developing prostate cancer was not dependent on the diet of the men. This means that even though men consumed more meat and fewer fruits, they still enjoyed the benefit of eating mushrooms.

Professor Zhang emphasized. However that eating a healthy and balanced diet is still more important than “filling your shopping basket with mushrooms.” Despite the result of their study, he still highlighted the necessity of eating healthy daily.

Accordingly, the more frequent one eats mushrooms in a week, the higher the percentage of reduction in his risk of developing prostate cancer. Men who consumed mushrooms three or more times in a week benefited with a 17% lower risk as compared to those who ate less than once per week.
