UPDATE: 9:30 p.m. EDT -- Media reports from Meriden, Connecticut, now say that reports of a gunman at the Westfield-Meriden Mall are "unfounded." In addition, Connecticut State Police tweeted that the situation was not matching initial reports.

Original story:

A shopping mall in Meriden, Connecticut, was on lockdown Thursday evening on reports of a gunman present in the shopping center, Hartford Fox station WTIC-TV reported.

Store employees at the Westfield-Meriden Mall told the station they were instructed to remain inside their stores, the station reported, but local police had not yet confirmed the presence of a gunman.

Meanwhile, WTNH-TV in New Haven reported a "heavy police presence" at the scene. No shots had been heard, a store employee told the station.

Meriden is located about halfway between Hartford and New Haven.
