Shadowhunters
Here's what fans can expect from “Shadowhunters” Season 2. Freeform

New photos teasing “Shadowhunters” Season 2 have been released.

The images feature Katherine McNamara (Clary), Isaiah Mustafa (Luke), Dominic Sherwood (Jace) and Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle). There’s a darker vibe to the photos when compared to the first season’s, and the darkness hints at what the show’s direction will be for the upcoming season.

Speaking of the decision to change the series’ vibe, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, who took over for Ed Decter, told Entertainment Weekly that they thought it would be “cooler” if the show’s visuals were a bit darker.

Aside from the visuals, the upcoming season will also focus on relationships, according to Slavkin. “We’re character guys,” the executive producer said. “We wrote ‘Smallville’ for many years and the thrill of that for us was the character and the growth and the relationships between the people. If anything, in Season 2, we’re leaning more into that. Of course there’s missions and of course there’s hunting, but the yearning, the longing, the triangles, the relationships is what really turns us on.”

One of the characters who will grow significantly from the previous season is Clary. In an interview with VVV magazine, McNamara said fans of the series will be surprised to see her character become, in a way, stronger than Jace. In the first season of the series, Clary had just been introduced to the shadow world and did not know what to make of her newfound identity. Things will change in the upcoming season, and Clary will be the one to help Jace get through his period of uncertainty.

Despite being more sure of herself, however, Clary will still face a lot of relationship hurdles. One of the things she will be challenged to overcome is Alec’s (Matthew Daddario) hate for her. Season 2 will feature the two still butting heads.

“Shadowhunters” Season 2 will premiere Jan. 2, 2017 on Freeform.
