  • Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell said he's retiring due to his mental and physical health conditions
  • He thanked the band's "amazing" fans for their support throughout the years
  • The singer was previously diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and has suffered medical setbacks, including heart failure

Steve Harwell is retiring from performing with Smash Mouth.

The frontman for the rock band — best known for their '90s hits "All Star" and "Walkin' on the Sun" — announced that he's stepping away from the stage due to his mental and physical health conditions, shortly after he was recorded slurring his words and yelling at the audience during a festival in upstate New York, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The 54-year-old singer was diagnosed eight years ago with cardiomyopathy and has suffered medical setbacks, including heart failure and acute Wernicke's encephalopathy, which impacts motor functions such as his speech and memory.

"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream," Harwell said in a statement obtained by EW.

He also addressed his bandmates, saying, "It's been an honor performing with you all these years and I can't think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with."

Harwell continued, "To our loyal and amazing fans, thank you, all of this was possible because of you. I've tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues, and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn't able to."

Harwell seemed to be referring to his performance with Smash Mouth during the Big Sip beer fest in Bethel, New York, over the weekend. He made headlines for appearing to curse at the crowd from the stage and other unusual behavior.

A TikTok user named Haley captured the performance on video and described the set as the "most chaotic show I've ever been to." The clip showed the band having technical issues during the performance and Harwell dropping a drink, swaying onstage and putting up a middle finger.

The singer "forgot where he was [and] his own lyrics and had limited understanding of his environment due to one of his episodes," an unnamed source familiar with the situation told EW. The insider also called the footage "unfortunate" and said it doesn't reflect who Harwell is.

Harwell had dealt with addiction over the years, which has led to mental health issues, according to the source.

Prior to his announcement, TMZ reported that Harwell was planning on taking a hiatus from Smash Mouth, but instead, he's officially retiring.

In his retirement statement Tuesday, the singer thanked fans for helping the band sell over 10 million albums worldwide, putting them on top of radio charts, and keeping "All Star" relevant.

"I cannot wait to see what Smash Mouth accomplishes next and am looking forward to counting myself as one of the band’s newest fans," Harwell said.
