Good news for all the "Sonic the Hedgehog" fans, as the official social media handle of the movie franchise has announced the release date.

The official Twitter handle revealed Monday the third installment of the franchise was slated to release in theaters on Dec. 20, 2024.

"Running faster, flying higher, and punching harder," they wrote. "#SonicMovie3 hits theaters on December 20, 2024."

The tweet also featured a GIF of all three main characters - Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.

Fans immediately shared their excitement in the comments section. The tweet received more than 76K likes, and over 19K retweets within 24 hours.

"Sonic 2 was one of the best movies of the year, I hope this movie does the same as sonic 2 did too," one of the fans wrote, while another one questioned why the release date has been scheduled after two years to which a fan responded, "It's probably 2 years *because* it's a CGI heavy movie. That stuff takes time."

The first installment of the franchise, "Sonic the Hedgehog," was released in June 2020. "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" was released in April, this year. The movies are adaptations of the video game series of the same name.

Ben Schwartz, who voiced Sonic the Hedgehog's character in the first two installments, opened up about the third movie in May.

"It's very exciting and surreal," Schwartz said. "I've been doing voiceover since 2005, so it feels really exciting that something I did in the VO world is starting to hit with people and people are getting excited by it."

"For ['Sonic 2'], we blew it out so much, and for '3,' [sic] it's going to be bananas, it's going to be crazy! I can't wait," he added.

The second installment of the franchise introduced popular characters from the video game series, like Knuckles and Tails. Since then, fans have been excited to see more of them.

The producers of the franchise, Toby Ascher and Neal H. Moritz, also disclosed previously they were planning to expand the franchise by creative "Sonic cinematic universe."

Moreover, the director of the franchise Jeff Fowler also teased there could be a spin-off series based on Knuckles' character.
