Sophia Bush On 'Weird' 'One Tree Hill' Filming Experience: 'We Were Fetishized'

Sophia Bush got candid about her experience when she was still filming the hit American drama TV series "One Tree Hill."

Bush, 38, played Brooke Davis on the TV show that ran for nine seasons. She spoke about her experience on the set of "One Tree Hill" in the "Chicks in the Office" podcast Friday.

"It was weird because, in some ways, we were treated like adults," she was quoted by E! News as saying. "Looking back on it, we can see the ways in which we were fetishized and we had this lens of adultification put over us with this idea that we were supposed to know everything and have answers, and be, ultimately, professional."

To make her point clear, the "Chicago P.D." star explained that they were not aware of the technical terms used when they were shooting. She was only in her early 20s when she did the series and there was a lot of confusion on set.

"When we didn't even know what the technical terms were. It was like, 'Get on your mark!' And you're like, 'What are you talking about? What is a mark?' We were expected to be these adults and yet, we were also looked at kind of as pawns." she added.

Bush went on and said that she and her "One Tree Hill" co-stars — who she didn't identify — were being controlled and manipulated by the "grown-ups" they "trusted." She added that at the time, there were no social media, so there was no outlet to air their concerns on pay disparity and work environment.

Due to the experience, she became extra diligent when it comes to creating a positive environment on sets. She wanted a professional space where everyone is comfortable.

"I want my sets to be really professional—we're not here to tolerate a bunch of dilly-dallying or bulls--t," she described. "I want sets that I work on to be places that people can ask any question and get it answered, where we can hold ourselves to a degree of excellence as a challenge, not as a threat, and where it can just be fun."

In 2017, the cast and crew members of "One Tree Hill" wrote a letter accusing former showrunner Mark Schwahn of sexual harassment. Bush, Hilarie Burton, Bethany Joy Lenz and Jana Kramer all supported Audrey Wauchope, a colleague who accused Schwahn of sexual harassment. Burton also accused Schwahn of inappropriate behavior for allegedly "forcing himself" and kissing her on the mouth against her will.

In 2017, Schwan was fired on "The Royals" due to the wave of sexual harassment allegations.

“We have concluded our investigation and Mark will not be returning to The Royals,” the producers of Lionsgate TV said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The fourth season of the show has already completed production and will air as scheduled on E! in the spring.”
