Fans of the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” were devastated when the show was canceled in 2014 after 6 seasons. Since then, Disney + has decided to bring the show back for one final season. The trailer was just released, showing two iconic characters facing off at long last.

“Soon the galaxy will be remade,” a mysterious ominous voice states at the beginning of “The Clone Wars” trailer. After more images of the Clone army gathering up forces against the Jedi, that voice is revealed to be long-time Star Wars villain Darth Maul. Fans who have been watching “The Clone Wars” (or those who stayed to the end of “Solo: A Star Wars Story”) know that, despite his supposed death in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” Darth Maul is still alive and scheming.

This should come as no surprise for fans who have stuck with the official canon of the animated series, led by Dave Filoni, whose most recent work was “The Mandalorian” with Jon Favreau.

The story takes place chronologically at the end of the Clone War saga, just before “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” kicks off with Anakin Skywalker’s descent into the dark side. We are given a morbidly cryptic hint at this near future in the trailer when Anakin reaches out to touch a hologram of Padme, something that evokes the image of a force ghost. This is possible foreshadowing for her demise at the hands of Anakin.

But just as these characters are still good and alive, Mace Windu, who is a big character in the TV series, expresses that he senses an attack on the Jedi is imminent. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bo-Katan, Captain Rex, and the Mandalorian group the Nite Owls also return.

But perhaps most famously, Ahsoka Tano (who recently made her live-action debut as a cameo in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”) is back and questioning the role of the Jedi more than ever after leaving the order, seeing them more as soldiers for hire rather than religious peace-seekers.

The final moments of the trailer show Ahsoka and Darth Maul finally facing off as the ultimate finale of The Clone Wars saga.

The 7th and final season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” begins streaming Feb. 21 on Disney +.
