“Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed that Reign’s introduction in Season 3 of the CW series will divide the show’s core characters.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Kreisberg said that Reign’s (Odette Annable) alter ego, Samantha Arias, will develop connections to the show’s main characters, and those bonds will eventually cause disagreement among members of Team Supergirl.

“Everyone will have a relationship with her, and that will drive much of the season in terms of how far they’re willing to go to stop Samantha when she becomes Reign,” Kreisberg explained. “Some will believe she needs to be saved; others will think she needs to be stopped.”

As previously reported, Samantha has no clue that she is actually Reign at the beginning of the new season. “When we meet Reign, she’s just a woman,” Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly last week. “She’s a single mom, and she has no idea that she is Reign; she has no idea that she was the baby in the pod at the end of last season, so the journey that she takes this season is watching her realize her heritage and see how it manifests.”

Kreisberg also told TV insider that Samantha’s story is a “fun dark-mirror version of the journey Christopher Reeve took in the original Superman as Clark.”

In the comics, Reign is a Worldkiller, a genetically engineered Kryptonian weapon created by Supergirl’s biological father, Zor-El. Just like Supergirl, Reign possesses superhuman strength and has the ability to fly. Created by Michael Green, Mike Johnson and Mahmud Asrar, Reign first appeared in “Supergirl Vol. 6 #5” in March 2012.

Interestingly, Annable said during a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con last July that her character was not sent to Earth to go on a killing spree. “She had a very specific agenda that she is out to [achieve] and you’ll see that story unfold throughout the season,” Annable said (via Hidden Remote). “[Her journey is] really amazing because it’s kind of a heartbreaking story. I think you’ll feel for her.”

“Supergirl” Season 3 premieres on Monday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
