supernatural season 11 spoilers
Sam (Jared Padalecki, left) and Dean (Jensen Ackles, right) will face their biggest foe yet in Season 11 of "Supernatural." The CW

After the pre-Biblical force dubbed The Darkness was released in the Season 10 finale of “Supernatural,” we theorized that Season 11 of the hit CW series could only get… well, darker. And according to the upcoming installment’s most recent trailer – we were right. The cult-followed drama confirmed our spooky suspicions when the network released a promo video so gruesomely chilling we may just have to invest in a night light for this fall.

The lengthy video kicks off with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) confronting the primordial entity head on as the Impala gets swallowed whole by the cloud of doom. But as it turns out, the Winchester boys are no match for the destructive entity. In fact, they’re even forced to reach out to God himself for assistance.

“If you can hear me, God, we need your help,” the voice of Sam begs before gasping for breath.

And that isn’t the last moment during the trailer that fans will whimper in fear for the beloved character. Sam, who appears to be beaten, bloody and sporting black veins, is seen getting brutally tortured in the one-minute preview. In the stomach-turning scene, the youngest Winchester brother is spotted with his eyelids being forced open. But what exactly is he involuntary watching? Fans will find out when “Supernatural” returns on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

But not everything about Season 11 will be infused with darkness. In the very last scene of the trailer, Dean brings the levity to an emotionally-draining experience when he answers his phone with the crowd-pleasing line: “Ghostbusters…”

Executive Producer Jeremy Carver previously promised fans that they should expect a “fun” forthcoming installment during the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con.

"We're really proud of last season. We had a lot of intensely personal character stories," he said during the July event. "This year, we have more of an epic feel with a big bad, and a quest for the brothers to unite on. I think it's a special big bad we have this year. It's a pre-biblical story that's never been told. I think it's going to be a fun, epic feel. And most importantly, I think the brothers are going to be united in their need to take this thing down."

“Supernatural” will return to the small screen when Season 11 of the hit CW series airs on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m. EDT.
