An English teacher in Hong Kong who was also a volunteer at a local church was arrested this week over suspicions that he allegedly drugged, sexually assaulted and took nude photographs of seven male students in the past 13 months.

The unnamed teacher was detained on suspicion of indecent assault in a hotel along Hennessy Road Tuesday after police received a report from one of his alleged victims, who was an 18-year-old student, the South China Morning Post reported.

The teen, who attended classes at the private tutorial school the man worked at, had allegedly been invited to a hotel room to chat and drink beer on Monday night.

"The suspect offered the victim a capsule that he claimed was used to protect the liver, but it was filled with sleeping pill [powder]," Inspector Wong Cheung-chun of the Wan Chai district crime squad was quoted as saying.

The victim, who had known the teacher since 2016, fell asleep after taking the pill and woke up at around 3 a.m. the next day, according to the report. He allegedly found himself being molested by the teacher, which prompted him to run out of the room and call police.

Authorities reportedly discovered 600 nude photos of the student and other men on a tablet that was found at the scene.

"The men in the photos appeared to be unconscious," Wong said.

"We believe the suspect used the same tactic to feed them sleeping pills and sexually assaulted them when they were unconscious," the police inspector noted.

An investigation reportedly suggested the teacher had met the student three times in a hotel room since May, with the teen taking a similar pill and being assaulted after falling asleep each time.

Further investigation revealed the teacher had six more male victims, who were also his students, Wong said.

"Our investigation showed that between July of 2020 and early August of 2021, the suspect allegedly invited the six victims to his Ma Wan home [in Tsuen Wan] and hotel rooms in Central, Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui to chat and also offer them the capsules before sexually assaulting them and taking their nude photos," he explained.

Police reportedly searched the teacher's home and found a bottle of sleeping pills, a laptop and two hard disks containing more than 30,000 video clips and photos, including nude pictures of the seven victims and 20 videos of child pornography.

The teacher might have more victims as he worked as a private tutor and had been in contact with many male students over the past 10 years, Wong warned.

No charges have been filed as of Wednesday and the teacher was still being held for questioning.
