  • Lydia, Melissa McCarthy's character in "Thunder Force," eats raw chicken
  • It's what the character eats to maintain her superhuman strength
  • Lydia also bonds with another character over raw chicken
  • In an interview, McCarthy revealed what they were really eating

If you've seen "Thunder Force," Netflix's latest offering, you must have come across the scenes in which Lydia, Melissa McCarthy's character, eats raw chicken. Although it looks quite gross, Lydia consumes raw chicken to maintain her incredible superhuman strength.

One of the side-effects of having superhuman strength is that nothing seems very appetizing to Lydia. Moreover, her stomach can handle only a few things, and raw chicken is one of them. Lydia is understandably grossed out at first, but one bite in and she enjoys the juicy meat, so much so that she begins to constantly crave it.

Later in the movie, we can see that raw chicken also provides a bonding moment between Lydia and The Crab (Jason Bateman), who reveals that he is also fond of uncooked meat. Although odd, it is actually adorable and goes well with the plot of the movie.

But as we all know, ingesting raw chicken is not only unsafe but is also disgusting. So what were the actors really eating while filming these scenes?

"Would you be upset if I just said chicken?" McCarthy said when asked about it in a CBR interview. "This brilliant woman spent weeks and weeks and weeks figuring out how to really [mimic the texture] and get that color. It was pear, like Asian pear, but there were all these things done to it. I have to say when the plate was put down in front of me, it still really seemed like raw chicken, so she did her job incredibly well."

Ben Falcone, the director of the comedy-action flick, also thought it was really convincing. "It was so believable that we all got completely grossed out every time we saw it as did everybody who had to eat it. Melissa was like, 'I know it's a pear, but it's just hard not to imagine it as raw chicken.' So that was difficult for her to get through," he said in a press release.

When we think of pear slices, it is difficult to even imagine them looking like raw chicken. But somehow, the team made it possible. It is so convincing that somehow, it has become one of the highlights of the movie.
