A one-year-old girl in Taichung, Taiwan, was left paralyzed for life after her babysitter violently abused her. The incident took place in June this year and the babysitter stood trial in court Monday.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, the babysitter, surnamed Guo, was changing the baby’s diapers when she got frustrated because the girl was not sliding her legs through into the diapers properly. She got even more annoyed when the girl started crying loudly. Guo then picked the baby up from the crib and shook her violently. When the girl continued to cry, Guo pulled her from the crib, causing her to fall on the floor. The baby’s head hit the floor and sustained intracranial hemorrhage.

Upon inspection, doctors informed the girl’s family that the baby had sustained several injuries including a fractured arm and noticeable bruising on her head and chest. The toddler underwent an emergency surgery during which a blood clot was removed from her brain. However, doctors said the toddler’s brain injury cannot be completely cured and that she can only eat through a nasogastric tube for the rest of her life. When questioned, the babysitter initially told the family members that she was giving the baby a bath when she became unconscious. She later revealed the truth to them.

Meanwhile, Guo asked for a lighter sentence during the trial because the incident was an “accident” and she did not intend for it to happen.

“My daughter is barely clinging to life because of you, and you have the nerve to ask for a lighter sentence?” the baby’s mother said in response.

The trial was ongoing and the court was expected to pronounce the judgment on Nov.27.
