Hours after she faced scathing backlash for her American-flag themed Halloween costume, Fox News correspondent Tomi Lahren responded to the criticism, asserting she was not disrespecting the flag in any way.

Lahren posted a picture of herself wearing the flag as a cape and a fanny pack which had stars and stripes on it. The costume sparked sharp criticism from those on Twitter who suggested the attire disrespected the flag and even violated a portion of the U.S. code.

They also suggested that she was being hypocritical, especially after Lahren called out NFL athletes for the "take a knee" protest claiming that it was disrespecting the flag. The conservative political commentator took to Twitter herself and responded to those she said were "selectively patriotic Snowflakes who are melting over a Halloween costume."

Lahren posted what appeared to be a paragraph from the website of American Legion, a wartime veterans’ service organization. The lines were an answer to the question: "Is it permissible to wear an item of clothing that looks like the United States flag?" that was posted on the website. The answer, in part, read: "Unless an article of clothing is made from an actual United States flag, there is NO breach of flag etiquette whatsoever."

Several Twitter users then criticized Lahren for her choice of source for the answer.

However, the statement clashed with the U.S. code which states that the flag should not be worn: "No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart," the rule states.
