Fans got a new look at the long-awaited follow-up to the 1986 film "Top Gun" on Monday. The trailer includes callbacks and familiar sights from the original, except there is one major thing missing -- Iceman.

The story continues to follow Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise), a now-legendary ace pilot who apparently works as a flight instructor for young daredevils. One of them appears to be played by Miles Teller who, later in the trailer, conflicts with Cruise’s Maverick and shoves him. Teller’s character is Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, son of Mitchell’s deceased best friend and wingman Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, previously played by Anthony Edwards.

Some other newcomers spotted were Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connolly, and Ed Harris.

While the movie pays homage to some of Maverick’s legendary maneuvers, mixed with a slowed-down reprisal of the familiar “Top Gun” anthem, what was missing, as noted by many Twitter users, was the lack of one very important Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer.

However, according to Cruise himself, Kilmer’s character will, in fact, be returning for a “very special" reunion. Iceman was previously Maverick’s rival during his years' training with the Naval Academy, but by the end of the first film, the two had gotten over their differences and shaken hands. It currently isn’t known officially if Kilmer will return or, if he does, what that appearance might entail.

Yahoo Entertainment speculates that the next trailer just might feature the character due to the first trailer’s initial response. However, they could potentially be saving the reveal for the movie itself, considering it is a “special” kind of appearance.

Besides the “Top Gun” cast concern, the trailer has received a largely positive response with over 19K "likes" on Twitter and 43K on YouTube at press time.

The sequel hits theaters on June 26, 2020.
