In a shocking incident, a 40-year-old truck driver mowed down his two daughters Sunday as he suspected the eldest one was having an affair with someone. He then killed himself after leaving a suicide note.

The incident happened in the Indian city of Pune on Sunday. Police said Bharate Barate was angry with 18-year-old Nandini after he noticed that she was chatting with a boy on her phone, reports Times Now.

"Barate was a driver and owned a truck. On Saturday, he found his elder daughter chatting with some boy on her phone. Losing his temper over it, Barate beat her up. He was upset over her behavior," said senior police inspector Pradip Londhe.

Police said Barate woke up around 1 a.m. Sunday and went outside. He returned after some time and took both his daughters, Nandini and 14-year-old Vaishnavi, outside with him. His wife, who was asleep, also woke up after hearing the sound of the truck. She saw her two daughters lying on the road and Barate driving the truck toward them. The woman told police that her husband signaled her to join them, but she ran to the neighbors to seek help.

Barate reportedly had also written a suicide note, which said he and his wife, along with their two daughters, were ending their lives. He wrote that his daughter's behavior was inappropriate and no one should be held responsible for the deaths. Though he got his wife to sign the note, she claimed she did not read its contents.

"Based on the note and the circumstances, we suspect that after running over his daughters, the man jumped out of the truck which was moving at slow speed, and threw himself in front of the vehicle. We are verifying these aspects," Londhe told Times of India.

Police are also trying to ascertain why the girls did not try to escape after seeing the approaching truck. Primary investigation revealed they were not tied down.

"While Barate and his younger daughter Vaishnavi died on the spot, Nandini died in a hospital," the officer said.

A similar case was reported two months back in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where a man slit his wife's throat before running over her with his car. The accused, Gokul Kumar, suspected that his wife was having an affair. The duo, who were living separately, had filed for divorce.
