Vampire Diaries Kai
Kai (Chris Wood) makes a deal to bring back Elena in “The Vampire Diaries” Season 8, episode 13. The CW

“The Vampire Diaries” is bringing Elena Gilbert out of her magical coma. Actress Nina Dobrev confirmed her return, but she didn’t say how her character’s curse would be broken. However, The CW may have revealed the details in a trailer for episode 13.

Chris Wood will return as Kai in the Feb. 17 episode, but he surprised fans by first showing up at the end of episode 12. Bonnie (Kat Graham) had accidentally opened some sort of door to hell when Enzo (Michael Malarkey) was killed. It looks like Kai slipped through that door before Bonnie’s mother closed it.

The evil witch popped up when Alaric (Matt Davis) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) decided that they needed to come up with a way to defeat Cade (Wolé Parks).Damon thinks that a dagger that Cade made could be the key to killing him. “Sorry to interrupt,” Kai says. “But what if I told you I had a better idea?”

It isn’t clear what Kai’s version of a “better idea” is, but it’ll take a trade off for Damon to work with him. In the promo video for Season 8, episode 13, it’s clear that Alaric and Damon do not easily trust the man who took both of their loves away, and they don’t particularly want to save him from hell. Alaric, whose fiancée was killed at the altar last time Kai was around, is ready to kill the villain, but there is something that could save him.

“What if I brought back Elena?” Kai offers. Watch the promo video below:

Damon wants him to fulfill that promise quickly. He brings Kai to Elena’s coffin, and he demands that he bring her back right now. Will he actually do it? This is “The Vampire Diaries,” so it’s safe to say that it can’t be that simple.

It’s up for debate whether Kai can be trusted, and he probably won’t bring Elena back when Damon orders him to. But we know that Elena will be back eventually. Dobrev revealed that Elena will return in the series finale, along with a slew of other characters like John (David Anders), Jenna (Sara Canning) and Vicki (Kayla Ewell).

“Coming back for the series finale has been a whirlwind of emotion, nostalgia, love, tears of joy and bittersweet endings,” Dobrev wrote on Instagram after filming her final “Vampire Diaries” scene. “It feels like the beautiful closure we all needed, myself included, and I couldn’t have been happier to come home to be with my ‘TVD’ set family and friends. I feel the fans family will also be happy with the show’s conclusion when they tune in to watch the last episode air in a few short weeks.”

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 8, episode 13, titled “The Lies Will Catch Up To You,” airs Friday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
