The activities of the Alpha Epsilon Pi, a Hofstra University fraternity in Long Island, New York, were suspended after a video showing its members forcing a dog to drink beer from a keg at an off-campus party was posted online.

The video in question was posted on Twitter by a student of the Adelphi University, Long Island, with the social media handle @kristinaproscia. The five-second-long clip was recorded off someone’s phone which was playing the video on Snapchat, where it was originally uploaded. The video went viral over the weekend and was viewed over 100,000 times on Twitter.

In the video, at least two members of the Alpha Epsilon Pi could be seen directly involved in the incident. While one of them held the dog almost upside down, another squirted beer into its mouth from the keg, during the party. Yells of “Let’s go!” could be heard in the background.

A spokeswoman for the university told NBC News, Monday, the behavior displayed by the frat boys violated the code of community standards that every student was expected to abide by.

"The university has been in communication with Alpha Epsilon Pi International headquarters, as well as with chapter members regarding this off-campus incident," the spokeswoman said. "In accordance with university policy, the chapter has been placed on interim suspension pending an investigation."

Jonathan Pierce, a former international president of Alpha Epsilon Pi and the fraternity's spokesman, confirmed that Hofstra University chapter was placed on a "cease and desist" due to alleged violations of the organization's health and safety policies.

"During this investigatory period, there can be no chapter activities," Pierce said. "We hope that we are able to use this as a teaching moment to help build better young men who are committed to our policies and our mission of developing the future leaders of the world’s Jewish communities.”

Alpha Epsilon Pi was founded as a Jewish fraternity in 1913.

The dog in question was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which was owned by a 21-year-old senior at the school, Gary Rogers, a detective with the Nassau County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) said. He added that he checked on the dog Monday and it seemed to be in good health.

"No matter what, it’s rather disturbing that someone would make this decision to do this to an animal," Rogers said. "Alcohol can be poisonous to an animal. We hear about frat hazing all the time. We shouldn’t have frat hazing to [sic] animals."

Kristina, who uploaded the video on Twitter, said despite people asking her to take down the video because it showed animal abuse, she had decided against it.

“No I will not be taking this down. This is abuse. Stop asking me to take it down because it will “get them in trouble”. That’s not my problem. Maybe they shouldn’t have done this & then we wouldn’t be here,” she said in a tweet, adding in another that as the director of Harm Reduction and Prevention of her sorority, she felt it was her duty to “never support actions like the ones I have shared.”
