UPDATE: 1:43 p.m. EDT -- [Lionel Messi has been ruled out of action for seven to eight weeks, according to reports.]
Original story:

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi exited Saturday's La Liga match at Camp Nou after 10 minutes, having suffered a knee injury against UD Las Palmas.

The 28-year-old forward made a move from the right side, and his left-footed shot was blocked by Pedro Bigas. Messi had previously attempted to play through the pain, but asked to be subbed off after he realized he could not continue. He was replaced by up-and-coming forward Munir El-Haddadi.

It was the earliest Messi has been subbed off in his professional career. The Argentine has managed to avoid serious injury in the past, though he did get a knee injury knock against him in a 2012 Champions League match against Benfica.

Messi, a prolific scorer for club and country, is a four-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner. He has enjoyed a typically strong season in the 2015-2016 season after helping lead the Catalans to Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey titles last season.
