Police in California launched an investigation after a couple was caught allegedly having sex during an official Major League Baseball (MLB) game over the weekend, according to reports.

Two fans allegedly engaged in a sexual act in the stands of RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland, California, Sunday as home team Oakland Athletics faced off against the Seattle Mariners, TMZ first reported.

A woman appeared to be performing oral sex on a man while the two were isolated near the top of the stadium's section 334, purported footage of the incident that was uploaded to Twitter showed.

Authorities are aware of the allegations and have launched an investigation.

"The Oakland Police Department was not alerted to this incident until after the game, and we were advised that A's staff/cameras did not capture video of this during the game. We have initiated an investigation. However, the parties have not been identified, and no one has been cited/arrested at this time. The violation is 647(a) PC. Lewd acts in public," Candace Keas, the police department's public information officer, said in a statement to KRON 4.

The couple faces a penalty of up to six months in jail and a fine of $1,000 should they be charged and convicted.

Sunday's game ended with the Athletics winning against the Mariners 5-3.

In a similar incident, police in Ohio arrested a couple after they were caught having sex inside a Ferris wheel cabin.

David Davis and Heather Johnston, both 32, admitted to engaging in sexual intercourse while they were riding the Wonder Wheel attraction at the amusement park Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, at around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 14.

Four female amusement park visitors, two of whom were minors, witnessed the act as they were in the cart below the couple, according to an investigation report filed by the Sandusky Police Department.

Despite knowing they were being watched, Davis and Johnston continued with their behavior, the witnesses alleged.

The couple ended up admitting to having sex after they were informed that two of the witnesses were juveniles.

Police arrested them for public indecency, and their respective charges were enhanced to a first-degree misdemeanor as two of the witnesses were minors.
