Stocks gave up earlier gains on Monday as investors fretted about Europe's fiscal issues and financial sector, while technology stocks lost some strength.

The materials sector came under pressure after weekend data from China showed the country's copper demand dropped. Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold slid 4 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> slipped 36.94 points, or 0.36 percent, to 10,161.09. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gave up 6.04 points, or 0.56 percent, at 1,071.92. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 10.59 points, or 0.48 percent, to 2,185.86.
