Original story:

At least one person was killed and nearly two dozen people injured after an SUV plowed through a Christmas parade in a Milwaukee suburb.

A red SUV ran through a line of marchers at the Christmas Parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on Sunday afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring more than 20 people, Police Chief Daniel P. Thompson said in a press conference.

MSNBC reported that 11 adults and 12 children have been hospitalized.

Some of the people injured at the parade were rushed to nearby hospitals. Others were taken by family members, Thompson added.

Footage taken of the incident captured the SUV speeding past band members. Law enforcement officers can be seen running toward screaming parade-goers seconds later.

Angelito Tenorio, a West Allis, Wisconsin, alderman, said he heard a loud bang and saw at least 10 people, children and adults, lying on the ground after the vehicle drove through the parade.

“We just heard deafening cries and screams from the crowd, from the people at the parade. And people started rushing, running away with tears in their eyes crying,” Tenorio told the Associated Press. “It just happened so fast. It was pretty horrifying.”

Ocean Lantana, who attended the parade with family members, said the driver of the SUV fired shots out of his vehicle’s window while speeding through the parade.

“Right in front of my family, this man drives through the parade hitting as many people as possible while shooting out the window. He ran over several elderly women who were dancing in the parade and many others,” Lantana wrote in a tweet.

The suspect’s vehicle has been recovered following the incident. Police have also launched an investigation into a person of interest. Thompson did not say whether the person had already been taken into custody.

The Waukesha Police Department has advised people to avoid the downtown area. They also announced the establishment of a family reunification center.

Classes have been canceled for Monday by the Waukesha school district.
