Weather: Heavy Snow And Ice In Northeast, 15 Inches Of Snow Possible In Maine

A winter storm will affect the northeastern states through Friday, bringing mixed precipitation of ice and snow in the region. The heaviest impact is expected in northern Maine as parts of the state could get up to 15 inches of snow totals in some areas.
"A low pressure system will push across the Northeast through Friday afternoon" before moving offshore into the Atlantic early Saturday, the National Weather Service said in a Thursday report.
Heavy snow and ice are expected in affected states, with Maine getting the highest impact from the storm. Precipitation will then taper off on Saturday, the NWS noted.
In Maine, the Rangeley Lakes region and higher elevations of the White Mountains are expected to see freezing rain from 1 a.m. through 5 a.m. Friday, the NWS in Gray stated.

The NWS in Caribou also warned of possibly dangerous travel conditions during the morning commute as snowfall rates are expected to reach up to two inches per hour overnight.
In New Hampshire, officials at the NWS Northeast River Forecast Center (RFC) said minor flooding is possible in the Suncook River at North Chichester on Friday night due to the wintry mix of precipitation, limited melt, and near to above-normal streamflows.

In Massachusetts, weather officials at the NWS in Boston are expecting southerly winds with gusts of up to 50 mph through 2 p.m. Friday.

Rain or freezing rain is possible in central and eastern Vermont, as per officials at the NWS in Burlington. Residents have been urged to take extra care when driving due to possible icy road conditions.

Over in New York, a few power outages are possible as well as some downed tree limbs due to strong wind gusts of up to 50 mph overnight through Friday morning.

In New Jersey, officials at the NWS in Mount Holly noted the possibility of rain showers and a few thunderstorms. Gusty winds are also expected in some areas, with Vineland expected to see gusts of up to 37 mph.

Cape May, Dover and Easton are expected to see wind gusts of up to 36 mph through Friday evening.
On the other side of the U.S., western states are expected to see more dumps of rain throughout the weekend, with California retaining its place as the center of new atmospheric rivers battering the deluged state.
