“Captain Marvel 2” was always assumed to be coming, but it seems the Marvel Studios sequel is officially in development. The movie will release a full three years after the first hit theaters.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is “eyeing a potential 2022 release date” for the Brie Larson follow-up. However, Disney revealed last year that they have dates earmarked for Marvel releases. These are the potential release dates for “Captain Marvel 2”:

  • Feb. 18, 2022
  • July 29, 2022

It’s tough to say which of these dates will go to Carol Danvers. The first film was released in March 2019, so February would be the closest to that time of year. However, Marvel is likely to reserve that spot for a new character. Late winter release dates served both “Captain Marvel” and “Black Panther” well, and they’re hoping to do the same with "Shang-Chi" next year.

More established characters or teams typically get a May date to kick off the summer box office season. That’s why “Black Panther 2” will release May 6, 2022.

Based on this, it seems like “Captain Marvel 2” might land on July 29, 2022, giving the late-summer box office a jolt.

Fans will have to wait for Disney to make official announcements about the empty 2022 release dates.

In addition to an unclear release date, fans don’t know much about what to expect in the sequel other than a new behind-the-scenes team. Megan McDonnell is reportedly in final negotiations to write “Captain Marvel 2.” The scribe is a staff writer on “WandaVision,” the upcoming Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) limited series on Disney+. The studio is also searching for a female director, indicating that Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden will not return.

The first “Captain Marvel” was a major box office success, earning $1.13 billion at the worldwide box office.
