Angelina Jolie went through a public divorce in 2016 with then-husband Brad Pitt. It took a long time for Jolie to heal and now she is finally opening up about how she is handling her “emotional scars" in this year's final issue of Harper's Bazaar.

In the interview, Jolie was asked if she felt like she was finding herself again. “The part of us that is free, wild, open, curious can get shut down by life. By pain or by harm,” Jolie said. “My children know my true self, and they have helped me to find it again and to embrace it. They have been through a lot. I learn from their strength.”

What Jolie said she values most about her family are difference and diversity. She added that she doesn’t “want to live in a world where everyone is the same”.

The interview goes on to discuss much more than her family life. In the piece, the actress revealed that she had an “awakening” in her 20s by realizing the freedoms she grew up having compared to other people, therefore inspiring her to be the person she is today.

She also gave her input on if there has been any progress made in Hollywood in light of the #MeToo movement. Jolie pointed out that “legal changes and protections are needed” and that hasn’t happened yet.

At one point in the interview, she is asked to share a message for the readers. “My dream for everyone in 2020 is to remember who they are and to be who they are regardless of what might be disrupting their ability to be free,” she said. “If you feel you are not living your life fully, try to identify what it is or who it is that is blocking you from breathing. Identify and fight past whatever is oppressing you.”

The Dec.-Jan. 2019-2020 issue of Harper's Bazaar will be available on newsstands on Nov. 19.
