“Avengers: Endgame” has changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. There were quite a few deaths in the epic film, and it’s time to look back at which characters audiences had to say goodbye to.

[That means there are “Avengers: Endgame” spoilers below.]

Iron Man: Dead

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) died by taking the Infinity Stones from Thanos at the last second and using them to turn the purple alien and his crew to dust. The Infinity Stones weren’t meant to be used by the average human. Even Thanos and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) suffered some damage after using them, so it makes sense that Iron Man physically couldn’t survive.

Black Widow: Dead

When Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) went to Vormir, they didn’t realize what it would take to get the soul stone. However, both were very willing to sacrifice themselves. Natasha has always had red in her ledger, so it wasn’t surprising to see her want to sacrifice herself for the greater good. It was, however, a bit surprising that Nat never got a funeral while Tony had a big service with every hero in attendance.

Thanos: Dead

Thanos (Josh Brolin) first dies in the present when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) cuts his head off, but that’s not the end of the villain. A version from the past comes to the future after the Avengers assemble their new Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos is determined to stop them and attacks the Avengers compound. However, he and his army can’t handle all the returned superheroes. Once Iron Man has the Infinity Stones, he snaps Thanos and his army into dust.

Vision: Dead

Technically, this happened in “Infinity War,” but it’s worth noting that he seems to be the only character whose death stuck from the 2018 film. A past version of Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is running around, and a past version of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) managed to sneak away from everyone after the Battle of New York using the Tesseract, meaning they can both show up again. Vision (Paul Bettany), however, remains dead after Thanos killed him in “Infinity War.” This raises some questions about how the Disney+ TV show “Wandavision,” starring Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision, will work.

Captain America: Retired

Despite rumors swirling, he did not die in “Avengers: Endgame,” but Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) certainly isn’t joining another fight. After traveling through time to return the Infinity Stones, Steve found Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and settled down with her to live happily ever after. He shows up as an old man to pass his shield off to Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

“Avengers: Endgame” is in theaters now.
