The nation’s leading infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has an encouraging message for children this holiday season as COVID cases continue to surge across the country.

He told USA Today, “Santa is not going to be spreading any infections to anybody.”

Fauci calmed the fears of children who may be concerned about Santa's health as he rushes to deliver presents around the world on Christmas Eve., putting himself at risk of contracting the virus.

"Santa is exempt from this because Santa, of all the good qualities, has a lot of good innate immunity," Fauci explained.

While Santa may be considered a high-risk candidate for contracting the coronavirus based on his age and weight, Fauci maintains that he is taking the necessary precautions to stay safe.

The good news about Santa comes as malls across the nation make modifications to their traditional family visits with Saint Nick. Plexiglass barriers have been put up for safety and reservations are required for most mall visits, as well as face masks. Some malls have even gone virtual for their visits with Mr. Claus to help keep families safe during the holiday season.

Santa is also taking additional precautions to make sure that children all over the world have a Merry Christmas by holding Zoom calls and making sure he follows social distancing guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a YouTube video, Santa gave an update about the coronavirus and the North Pole, reminding children to socially distance and wash their hands to the tune of “Jingle Bells.”

“Remember, we will all get through this together,” he said.

Others have supported Fauci’s comments, with Dr. Greg Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group, telling USA Today that he had spoken with the North Pole.

Poland said he was told there were two infections among Santa’s elves, but “none of them serious.” He added, “It was a good reminder to the elves about wearing the mask properly. They now do that. It’s mandatory in the North Pole.”
